Japanese: タケネズミ(竹鼠) - タケネズミ（英語表記）bamboo rat

A primitive rodent with a sturdy structure similar to the pocket gopher, belonging to the family Muridae and subfamily Rhizomyinae. Three species, including the Chinese bamboo rat Rhizomys sinensis , are found in central and southern China, Assam, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra. Body length is 23-48 cm, tail length is 5-20 cm, and weight is 1-4 kg. The body is thick, the limbs are short, and the ears and eyes are small. The claws on the front feet, especially the claws on the third toe, are long and suitable for digging holes. The upper and lower incisors are large and protrude outside the mouth, and are also used for digging holes.

ポケットゴファーに似たがんじょうなつくりの原始的な齧歯（げつし）類で，ネズミ科，タケネズミ亜科に属する。中国中･南部からアッサム，マレー半島，スマトラにチュウゴクタケネズミRhizomys sinensisなど3種が分布する。体長23～48cm，尾長5～20cm，体重1～4kg。体は太く，四肢が短く，耳介と目が小さい。前足のつめ，とくに第3指のつめは長く，穴掘りに適する。上下の門歯は大きく口外へ突出し，穴掘りにも使用する。
