…After failing the imperial examination during the Changxing period of the Later Tang Dynasty (930-933), he gave up on his dream of government service and retired to the Jiushi Rocks of Mount Wudang in Hunan to study Taoism, and later lived in places such as Huashan Yuntaiguan. He was summoned by Emperor Shizong of the Later Zhou Dynasty, and twice traveled to the capital during the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty, where he was favored and given the title of Professor Xiyi. He loved the Book of Changes and wrote works such as Zhengyi Xinfa, and in particular the Taijitu (Tai Chi Tu), which is said to be the foundation of Song learning. …
