An ancient Italian god. He was worshipped together with the goddess Diana in the grove of Nemi near the Latin city of Aricia. Since horses were forbidden in the grove, he is identified with Hippolytus. Hippolytus was a hero in Greek mythology who was resurrected by Asclepius, the god of medicine, and was allowed to live in the grove as a god by Diana, who is identified with Artemis.

古代イタリアの神。ラテン都市アリキア近郊のネミの森の中でディアナ女神とともに祀られた。この森に馬を入れることが禁止されていたところから，ヒッポリュトスと同一視される。ヒッポリュトスは，ギリシア神話の英雄で，医神アスクレピオスによって復活させられ，アルテミスと同一視されるディアナによって，神としてこの森に住むことを許されたとみなされるようになった。
