British Broadcasting Corporation - British Broadcasting Corporation
British Broadcasting Corporation. Abbreviated as BBC. The representative of public broadcasting in the world. Founded in 1927. A public corporation independent of the government, it took over radio broadcasting from the British Broadcasting Company, which began in 1922. Television broadcasting began in 1936. Until the start of commercial television broadcasting in 1955, the BBC had a monopoly on broadcasting. Radio broadcasting is divided into Channel 1 for the general public, Channel 2 for light music and entertainment, Channel 3 for classical music, Channel 4 for general programming such as dramas and news programs, and Channel 5 for sports, education, and international relations. There are two television channels (both general programming). Overseas broadcasting began in 1932 for dominions and colonies, and is currently available in about 40 languages. Domestic broadcasting is funded by the general license fee, and advertising revenue is prohibited.
