A perennial succulent plant of the Agavaceae family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). Approximately 60 species are distributed in tropical Africa, South Africa, and eastern India. In Japan, it is grown as a potted plant or for cutting, but S. zeylanica Willd. is cultivated as a fiber crop in its native habitat. S. nilotica Bak. was introduced to Japan at the end of the Meiji period, but it is now considered to be the same species as S. trifasciata Prain. Many branch-replacing varieties have been created from this species, but S. trifasciata Prain has leaves with yellow margins, and is so widespread that this species is often referred to as Sansevieria. If a leaf cutting is taken, the plant will revert to a S. trifasciata without margins, so it is propagated by dividing the plant. The Harney species is also a branch-replacing plant, and was created in the United States in 1939. It has green leaves, is small at 10 to 30 centimeters tall, and is grown in a pot. Golden Harney is a variety of the Harney variety with yellow margins and beautiful wide spots. This variety also reverts to green when propagated by leaf cuttings. There is also Silver Harney, which has grayish-green leaves.

It is a high-temperature plant that grows at temperatures above 15°C in winter, but it is resistant to dryness and can survive winter at temperatures as low as 0°C if watering is restricted. Replanting and propagation are done during the high temperature period from June to September.

リュウゼツラン科（APG分類：キジカクシ科）の多年生多肉植物。熱帯アフリカ、南アフリカ、インド東部に約60種分布する。日本では観葉鉢物または切り葉用にするが、ゼイラニカS. zeylanica Willd.は原生地では繊維作物として栽培される。日本へは明治末年にチトセランS. nilotica Bak.が渡来したが、現在はアツバチトセランS. trifasciata Prainと同種とみなされている。本種からは多くの枝がわり品種がつくられているが、フクリンチトセランは葉が黄覆輪になる品種で、サンセベリアといえば本種をさすくらいに普及している。葉挿しをすると覆輪のないチトセランに戻ってしまうので、繁殖は株分けによる。ハーニー種も枝がわりで、1939年にアメリカでつくられた。葉は緑色で、高さ10～30センチメートルと小さく、鉢植えにする。ゴールデン・ハーニーはハーニーの黄覆輪種で、斑(ふ)の幅が広く美しい。これも葉挿しにすると緑葉に戻ってしまう。ほかに葉が灰白緑色のシルバー・ハーニーがある。

　高温性で冬は15℃以上で育てるが、乾燥に強く、給水を控えると0℃近くの低温でも越冬する。植換え、繁殖は6～9月の高温期に行う。
