After the defeat in the Battle of Shakushain, the Matsumae clan's control over the Ainu people was further strengthened, and especially after the establishment of the basho-contract system during the Genroku and Kyoho periods (1688-1736), the Ainu people were transformed from trading partners into laborers in the fishing grounds. However, the relationship between the Ainu people of the so-called "Oku-Ezo region," such as Akkeshi (Akkeshi), Kitappu (Kiritappu), and Kunashiri, and the Matsumae clan was somewhat different. In Akkeshi, a trading post (Akinaiba) was established as a trading post for the feudal lord during the Kan'ei era (1624-44) (see the entry on "Ezo trade"), followed by one in Kitap in 1701 and one in Kunashiri in 1754 (4th year of Horeki). However, until 1773 (2nd year of An'ei), the main focus of the management of the three trading posts was trade with the Ainu people, and even after the following year (1774) the three trading posts were contracted out to Hida-ya Kubei, trade continued to be the main focus for several years. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Key Tap" are listed below.
