This art museum is located in Basel, Switzerland. Founded in 1662 based on the collections of three generations of the wealthy Amelbach family, it is the oldest privately-run public art museum. The museum is centered on works collected by B. Amelbach (1533-91), who was a law professor at the University of Basel, and the collections of Holbein and Witts are particularly important. The museum also has a rich collection of 17th century Dutch paintings and modern art from Post-Impressionism onwards.
