A holiday celebrating the Emperor's birthday. Its origins date back to 748 (Tenpo 7) during the Tang Dynasty in China, when Emperor Xuanzong founded it based on Laozi's words "Eternal Heaven and Earth." It is recorded that in Japan in 775 (Hoki 6), Emperor Kōnin issued an imperial decree to celebrate his own birthday, with the meaning of wishing for an endless lifespan for the Emperor along with the heavens and earth. It was revived in 1868 (Meiji 1) following ancient precedents, and became a national holiday along with Kigensetsu in 1873. Ceremonies and banquets were held at the Imperial Palace on the day. After World War II, it was renamed "Emperor's Birthday." [Nobuhiko Sakai] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
