A prefecture-level city in the central and southern part of Sichuan Province, China. It is located at the confluence of the Minjiang River, a part of the Yangtze River system, and its tributaries, the Dadu River and the Qingyi River. It governs four city districts, including Wutongqiao, four counties, and two autonomous counties, and acts as the administrative agent for Emei City (as of 2016). Population: 3,357,000 (2014). In 1979, it was abolished as a county and became a city. It was the administrative center of Jiading Prefecture after the Song Dynasty, and is also known as Jiading. It is a key location for land and water transportation, and is a thriving commercial center for the distribution of goods for western Sichuan. It is also known for the production of a type of silk fabric called Jiaciu. Currently, in addition to the spinning and weaving and chemical industries, there is the Tongjiezi hydroelectric power station on the Dadu River in the southwest. The city is also served by the Chengdu-Kun Line and the Chengdu-Mianle Intercity Railway (Jiangyou-Chengdu-Emeishan). The cliff-carved Giant Buddha on Lingyun Mountain on the banks of the Minjiang River is famous, and together with Mount Emeishan in Emeishan City to the northwest of the city, it was registered as a mixed World Heritage Site (a heritage site with both cultural and natural value) in 1996 as the "Mount Emeishan and Leshan Giant Buddha" (World Mixed Heritage Site).
