Theater critic. Born in Shichikencho, Shita-ya, Tokyo. Studied from Ikubunkan Junior High School to Aoyama Gakuin Senior High School, during which he worked at Ueno Library and became well versed in kabuki scripts and play books. In 1911 (Meiji 44), he joined Engei Gahosha and edited the magazine Engei Gaho. After it ceased publication in 1943 (Showa 18), he edited its successor, Engeki Kai. Known for his vast knowledge and speed of writing, he was active in research and verification of kabuki, Japanese music, and dance, as well as in theater critique, direction, and songwriting. His books include "Kabuki Kyogen Orai" (1951), "Japanese Theatre Dictionary" (1944), "History of Japanese Dance" (1958), and "Dictionary of Traditional Japanese Music and Dance" (1956). He also edited and compiled "Dai Nanboku Zenshu" (Complete Works of the Great North and South) in 17 volumes (1925-1928) and "Kabuki Kyogen Masterpiece Collection" in 12 volumes (1921-1923).
