This is a carcinoma caused by the malignant transformation of trophoblastic cells, which are the nutrient cells of the placenta, and is also called malignant choriocarcinoma. It is a relatively rare disease among gynecological cancers. It occurs most frequently after a hydatidiform molar pregnancy, and is thought to occur in 5-10% of moles, but it can also occur after induced abortion, spontaneous abortion, or childbirth. It occurs when trophoblastic cells remaining in the body after pregnancy become cancerous, and usually occurs several months to several years after pregnancy (such choriocarcinoma is called gestational choriocarcinoma). In very rare cases, choriocarcinoma can develop as a teratoma in the ovaries or testes (in this case in boys) unrelated to pregnancy (this is called teratomatous choriocarcinoma).
