...Comedy was also imitated by the ancients, but more importantly, the Italian comedies introduced the highly improvised commedia dell'arte in terms of acting, and the serious comedy (commedia sostenuta) in terms of dramaturgy. The latter gave birth to Pierre de Larivey's (c. 1540-1619) Ghosts, and the former was the driving force behind the dynasty of farce in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This can be seen in the success of the comedy trio (Gaultier-Garguille (1572?-1633), Gros-Guillaume (?-1634), and Turlupin (1587?-1637)) at the Théâtre de Bourgogne (known in Japan as the Théâtre de Bourgogne), the only permanent theater in Paris at the time owned by the Guild of Passion Plays, and in the street performances typified by the comic skits of the Tabarin brothers at the Pont Neuf Square. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Larivey, P.de" are listed below.
