Kanteletar - Kanteretar (English spelling)

A collection of Finnish national lyric poetry. Three volumes in total. 652 poems, 22,329 lines. Published 1840-41. Along with the national epic poem "Kalevala," it is one of the two great masterpieces of Finnish traditional literature. E. Ronrut began collecting traditional poetry in 1828, and compiled the epic poems in "Kalevala" and the lyric poems in "Kanteletal." Volume 1 is a collection of lyric poems about village life, including weddings and livestock farming, Volume 2 is a collection of lyric poems centered on the sorrows and joys of young men and women, and Volume 3 is a collection of ballads and narrative poems derived from historical facts and legends. The editors have adjusted the phrasing of the poems to match those of similar poems, but their value as traditional poetry has not been diminished. Like "Kalevala," "Kanteletal" has also inspired the country's poets and composers.

フィンランド民族叙情詩集。全3巻。652詩、2万2329行からなる。1840～41年刊。民族叙事詩『カレバラ』とともにフィンランド伝承文芸の双璧(そうへき)をなす。E・ロンルートは1828年から伝承詩を採集し続け、叙事詩を『カレバラ』に、叙情詩類を『カンテレタル』に集大成した。第1巻は婚礼や飼畜ほか村落生活を素材とする叙情詩、第2巻は若い男女の悲愁歓喜を中心とする叙情詩、第3巻はバラード、史実・伝説などに由来する物語詩からなる。編者によって類詩との語句の調整がなされているが、伝承詩としての価値は損なわれていない。『カレバラ』と同様に、『カンテレタル』もまた、この国の詩人や作曲家を刺激した。
