Elohim (English spelling)

The name of God used frequently in the Old Testament. It is the plural of El, the oldest and most widely used Semitic divine name. El originally meant power. When referring to the God of the Israelites, the plural means one God. The Israelites did not invent this name, but adopted the names El and Elohim from similar terms in other Middle Eastern countries to refer to their own god. The plural form of a single deity was common in the ancient East, where it referred to the representative of a community. It also seems to have been used to combine all the attributes of the divine being in one name. Elohim then means the one almighty God, the Ruler and Creator of all.

旧約聖書中にたびたび用いられる神の名。セム族最古の最も広く用いられた神名 El (エル) の複数形。 Elは元来力の意。イスラエル人の神を示すときは複数であっても唯一の神を意味する。この名前はイスラエル人がつくりだしたわけではなく，ほかの中東の国々の類似の語からエルやエロヒムの名を取入れてみずからの神を示すのに用いた。単一神格を複数形で表わすことは古代東方によくみられる例であり，共同体の代表者を示す。また，1つの名前で神なるもののすべての属性をまとめて表わしたようでもある。その場合エロヒムは一切の支配者，創造主である唯一の全能の神を意味する。
