Bukemyoumokusho (An extract of the names of warriors)

This book provides a comprehensive commentary on the samurai's duties, systems, clothing, weapons, and other nomenclature extracted from various sources. It is divided into 16 sections: job title, title, residence, clothing, official duties, documents, seasonal occasions, ceremonies, bows and arrows, armor, swords, flags, palanquins, arts and crafts, military battles, and miscellaneous. Hanawa Hokiichi began compiling it at the behest of the Edo Shogunate, and after his death, Nakayama Nobuna and Matsuoka Tokikata took over. After their deaths, the work was temporarily suspended, but was completed by members of the Wagakaku Kodansho. It has 381 volumes. It is an important book for the study of the samurai system. It is included in the "Zotei Kojitsu Sosho."

武家の職掌、制度、衣服、武具など諸般にわたる名目を、諸書から抄出して類挙解説した書。職名、称呼、居処、衣服、公事(くじ)、文書(もんじょ)、歳時、儀式、弓箭(きゅうせん)、甲冑(かっちゅう)、刀剣、旗幟(きし)、輿馬(よば)、術芸、軍陣、雑の16部門に分けている。塙保己一(はなわほきいち)が江戸幕府の命で編集に着手し、その没後は中山信名、松岡辰方(ときかた)が受け継ぎ、彼らの死後一時中断したが、和学講談所員によって完成。381冊。武家制度研究に重要な書である。『増訂故実叢書(そうしょ)』所収。
