Yokobue
[1] [noun] ① A general term for a flute played sideways. [Meigoki (1275)] ② A type of flute used in particular in the Togaku style of gagaku. It is played with the neck held sideways, has seven holes in addition to the mouthpiece, and is about 40 centimeters long. It is also used as an accompaniment for saibaraku and roei. After the death of his close friend Kashiwagi, Yūgiri visits Kashiwagi's Kitakata Ochibanomiya and his mother, Ichijō no Miyasudokoro, and receives a flute from the lady-in-waiting, depicting events following Kashiwagi's death. [2] A woman who appears in the Tale of the Heike. She served Kenreimon'in and was loved by Saito Tokiyori (Takiguchi Nyudo), a vassal of Taira no Shigemori, but when Tokiyori became a monk, she followed him and became a nun. 〘Noun〙 A type of flute used in the Tang music of gagaku. Also called Ryuteki . A flute played with the neck held sideways, it is 1 shaku 3 sun 2 bu 8 rin (about 40 cm) long. It is also used as an accompaniment for saibaraku and recitation. Ojaku. → Yojo/yokobue. [Iroha Jiruisho (1177-81)] [Li Yi - Poem about the Northern Expedition] [Essays] (1) In "Essays: Watasho Dan-2," there is a theory that Wauteki was avoided because it sounds like "king's enemy," and there are many variations in the on-reading of "yokobue."
(2) The "Sarashina Diary" (a copy by Teika in the Kamakura period) from the end of the Heian period has the reading "Iyau Jyau" . The "Iroha Jiruisho" (a copy from the early Muromachi period) also has the reading "Iyau-chau". In the "Iroha Jiruisho" from the Insei period, in addition to the Japanese reading "Yokofue", four readings can be seen as onymoji: "Kuwa-ch(yaku)", "Wau-chaku", "Kuwa-teki", and "Wau-teki".

[1] 〘名〙① 横にかまえて吹く笛の総称。〔名語記(1275)〕② 特に、雅楽の唐楽に用いる笛の一種。首端を横にして吹くもので、歌口のほかに七孔あり、長さ一尺三寸二分八厘(約四〇センチメートル)。催馬楽や朗詠などの伴奏楽器としても用いる。龍笛(りゅうてき)。おうてき。〔十巻本和名抄(934頃)〕[2][一] 「源氏物語」第三七帖の名。光源氏四九歳の二月から秋まで。親友柏木の死後、柏木の北方落葉宮とその母一条御息所を見舞った夕霧が、御息所から柏木遺愛の横笛を贈られることを中心に、柏木没後の模様を描く。[二] 平家物語に登場する女性。建礼門院に仕え、平重盛の臣斎藤時頼(滝口入道)に愛されたが、時頼が出家したため後を追い尼となる。[三] 邦楽の曲名。(二)(二)の悲恋物語を題材としたもの。(1)長唄。明治二〇年(一八八七)頃、三世杵屋正治郎作曲。三宅花圃作詞。(2)長唄。明治二七年(一八九四)三世杵屋六四郎(後名二世稀音家浄観)作曲。作詞は菊園主人。研精会派の曲。

おう‐てき ワウ‥【横笛】

〘名〙 雅楽の唐楽に用いる笛の一種。一名、龍笛(りゅうてき)。首端を横にして吹く笛で、長さ一尺三寸二分八厘(約四〇センチメートル)。催馬楽、朗詠などの伴奏楽器としても用いられる。おうじゃく。→ようじょう・よこぶえ。〔色葉字類抄(1177‐81)〕〔李益‐従軍北征詩〕[語誌](1)「随筆・綿所談‐二」にはワウテキは「王敵」に通じるので避けられたとの説もあり、「横笛」の音読みに変化形が多い。
(2)平安末期の「更級日記」(鎌倉時代の定家写本)には「ゐやう定(ぢゃう)」の例がある。「伊呂波字類抄」(室町時代初期写)にも「ヰャウチャウ」の読みがある。院政期の「色葉字類抄」には和訓「ヨコフエ」のほか、字音語として「クヮウチ(ャ)ク」「ワウチャク」「クヮウテキ」「ワウテキ」の四種の読みが見える。
