A perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family (illustration) that grows densely in high mountain areas with lots of rocks and gravel. The Japanese name means a grass with leaves resembling bird claws that grow in high mountains. The roots are thick and extend deep underground. The stems frequently branch at the base and rise at the tips, forming a dense mat about 5 cm high. The leaves are linear, about 1 cm long, and blunt at the tips. In July and August, many flower stalks grow on the mat, each bearing a single flower about 1 cm in diameter at the tip. There are five sepals with rounded tips. There are five white petals with no notches. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
