Cotton gin (cotton ginning machine)

Japanese: 綿繰器(綿繰機) - わたくりき（英語表記）gin

It is also called a cotton gin. Ginning involves removing the seeds from picked seed cotton, but cotton fibers grow on the surface of the seeds, and it takes a lot of effort to separate them by hand. A traditional cotton gin has a pair of wooden rollers fitted closely together in a frame, and when a handle on one roller is turned, a spiral gear engraved on the end of the roller causes the other roller to rotate in the opposite direction. When seed cotton fibers are placed between the pair of rollers, the fibers are pulled in between the rollers, but the seeds cannot pass through and are separated from the fibers and fall to the front.

コットンジンともいう。摘み取ってきた実綿（みわた）から種子を除くことを綿繰りというが，綿の繊維は種子の表皮に生えていて，手で引き離すにはたいへん手間がかかる。在来の綿繰器は，1対の木製のローラーが近接して枠にはめられていて，一方のローラーに付いているハンドルを回すと，ローラーの端に刻まれたらせん状の歯車により，他方のローラーが反対方向に回転するようになっている。この1対のローラーの間に実綿の繊維をかませると繊維はローラーの間に引き込まれていくが，種子は通り抜けられないので繊維から離され手前に落ちる。
