A Protestant sect. It originated from Wesley's Awakening Movement and was officially established in 1795 when it separated from the Church of England. Its name comes from its motto, "Live according to the methods set forth in the Bible." In general, it has a strong social interest and is committed to education, social work, and foreign missions. It was introduced to Japan in 1873 by American Methodist missionary RS McCrea, and the Japan Methodist Church was established in 1907. It joined the United Church of Christ in Japan when it was established, and is responsible for running schools such as Aoyama Gakuin and Kwansei Gakuin.

プロテスタントの一派。ウェスリーの信仰覚醒(かくせい)運動に端を発し，1795年正式に英国国教会から分離して成立。〈聖書に示されている方法methodに従って生きる〉とのモットーからこの名がある。概して社会的関心が強く，教育・社会事業・外国伝道等に力を注ぐ。日本には1873年米国のメソディスト教会宣教師R.S.マクリーによって伝えられ，1907年日本メソディスト教会が成立，日本基督教団の成立とともにこれに加わり，青山学院，関西学院などの経営にあたっている。
