A city on the north bank of the Tama River in southern Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It borders Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, across the Tama River. It is the smallest city in Tokyo and the third smallest in Japan. It is said to be the place where Koreans who naturalized in ancient times migrated, and there are many ancient tombs and Izumi-style Haji pottery has been excavated. After the opening of the Odakyu Electric Railway in 1927, it developed into a residential area. Since the 1950s, full-scale residential development has progressed. There are factories producing precision machinery and electrical appliances. 6.39 ^km2 . Population 78,751 (2010).

東京都南部，多摩川北岸の市。1970年市制。多摩川をはさんで神奈川県川崎市に接する。都内の市では面積最小，全国でも３番目に小さい市。古代に帰化した高麗(こま)人が移住した地と伝え，古墳が多く和泉式の土師(はじ)器が出土する。1927年小田急電鉄の開通後住宅地として発展。さらに昭和30年代以降，本格的な宅地化が進んだ。精密機器，電気器具の工場がある。6.39km²。７万8751人（2010）。
