A city on the north bank of the Tama River in southern Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It borders Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, across the Tama River. It is the smallest city in Tokyo and the third smallest in Japan. It is said to be the place where Koreans who naturalized in ancient times migrated, and there are many ancient tombs and Izumi-style Haji pottery has been excavated. After the opening of the Odakyu Electric Railway in 1927, it developed into a residential area. Since the 1950s, full-scale residential development has progressed.
