Liberal theological thought emerged within the Protestant churches of Japan in the mid-Meiji period as a result of the activities of German missionary Spinner (who came to Japan in 1885) and American missionary Knapp (who came to Japan in 1889). With the help of modern philosophy and scientific thought, this thought offered a liberal interpretation of Christianity and theology, advocated a human-centered, rationalist stance, and advocated a Christianity for intellectuals. It resonated with many people and at one time had a major influence within the church.
