It is the capital of the voyage of the same name in western Poland, with a population of 115,800 (1995). It is an industrial city at the northwestern edge of Lower Silesia, and was part of Germany until before World War II. The current name of the city is the Polish translation of the German name Grünberg (Green Mountain). Many German-style buildings from the 13th to 16th centuries remain. The city produces lignite, and thermal power generation is used for metal processing, various machinery, wine and brandy manufacturing, and woolen textile industries.
