Gankokei

Japanese:
Gankokei

A loyal subject of the Tang Dynasty in China. He was a member of the Yan clan of Langya County (on the border between Shandong and Jiangsu Provinces) and a cousin of Yan Zhenqing, a famous calligraphy figure in history, who was the fifth generation grandson of Yan Zhitui, author of the Yan Family Instructions. During the Tianbao period (742-756), he served as a field magistrate under An Lushan and was promoted to the prefect of Changshan County (Hebei Province). However, in 755, when An Lushan led a large army of barbarians and Han rebelled against the Tang Dynasty on the northeastern border, he joined forces with Yan Zhenqing to raise a loyal army, captured some of the rebel generals, and sent them to the capital. Later, the rebel Shi Siming surrounded Changshan Castle, and he was forced into a siege. After fighting bravely, he ran out of food and was captured by the bandits. He was brought before An Lushan, where he continued to denounce Lushan's rebellion, and was eventually killed.
