A marine animal belonging to the Polychaeta class of the phylum Annelida, family Polychaeta. Its name comes from the fact that the center of its body is constricted, shaped like a daruma doll. It is commonly found in the waters around Japan, living on muddy bottoms at depths of 25 to 700 meters. Its body length is 0.5 to 3 cm, its width 0.5 to 1.5 cm, and it has 20 to 22 segments. Individuals tend to be smaller in shallow waters and larger in deeper waters. Its body is dark gray and covered with small projections. The second, third, and fourth segments have a semicircular arrangement of hook-shaped setae, and there is a pair of reproductive projections on the ventral side between the fifth and sixth segments. The ventral surface at the rear of the body has a wide brown abdominal plate, around which long needle-like setae protrude, and from which numerous thread-like gills protrude from the rear end. It is not used in any particular way. [Minoru Imajima] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
