An island in the Persian Gulf 55 km off the coast of Bushehr, Iran. In Japan, it is often called Kharg Island. It is 8 km north to south and 4 km east to west. In the Middle Ages, it was known as a port of call for pearl fishing and for maritime traffic from Basra at the mouth of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to Oman and India. In the late 18th century, it became a trading base for the Dutch and French East India Companies, but was occupied by Britain from 1838 to 1842 and in 1856. Since the 1950s after World War II, oil exports have grown rapidly, and it has developed into an Iranian crude oil shipping port where large tankers can dock in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf.
