Explanation of the Ming Law and National Characters

Japanese: 明律国字解 - みんりつこくじかい

A Japanese-language commentary on the basic legal code of the Ming Dynasty in China. Written by Ogyu Sorai. 16 volumes. During the Edo period, around the time of Shogun Yoshimune, research on Chinese legal systems was actively carried out, and several commentaries on the Ming Code appeared, such as Sakakibara Koshu's Daiming Code (30 volumes) and Takase Gakuzan's Daiming Code (30 volumes), both of which were published in Kishu. This book by Sorai was the most widely used. There are two versions of the printed version, the Shimonro version and the Setsu Shusai series, and a handwritten version is also extant. Both versions contain translations and commentaries on the Ming Code (30 volumes) and the Monkei Jorei (Penal Code).

中国，明代の基本法典を日本語で解説した書。荻生徂徠（おぎゆうそらい）の著。16巻。江戸時代，将軍吉宗のころ中国法制の研究が盛んに行われ，明律の解説書も，紀州の榊原篁洲（さかきばらこうしゆう）《大明律例諺解》30巻，同じく紀藩の高瀬学山《大明律例詳解》30巻など，数種あらわれたが，徂徠のこの書がもっとも普及した。版本には四文楼本と拙修斎叢書本の2種があり，自筆本も現存しており，いずれも明律(30巻)と〈問刑条例〉との訳解を収めている。
