...General term for the Indian countries during the time of Buddha, as described in Buddhist scriptures. The word "great country" is a translation of mahājanapada, where maha means "big" and janapada means "human habitation." The names of the countries vary slightly depending on the scripture, but according to the early Pāli Buddhist scriptures, they are Aṅga, Magadha, Kāsī (Kāsi), Kosala (country), Vajji, Malla, Ceti, Vaṃsa, Kuru, Panchāla, Maccha, Sūrasena, Assaka, Avanti, Gandhāra, and Kamboja.
