Onchi Medical School

Japanese:
Onchi Medical School

In 1875, Western medicine (the so-called seven Western subjects) was added to the medical practitioner license exam, and traditional Chinese medicine doctors were no longer recognized in the system. This triggered a movement to preserve traditional Chinese medicine doctors. One of these was the establishment of the Onchi-sha, which was established on March 10, 1879, by Tokyo traditional Chinese medicine doctor Yamada Norihiro and others, who gathered together their comrades and called for support from all over the country, publishing a journal called Onchi-i-dan, and further establishing the Japanese and Chinese medicine training center (later the Onchi Medical School) to train the next generation of doctors and further developing the movement. The first president was Yamada Narihiro, the second president was Asada Sohaku, and the third president was Asai Tokutaro (national executive director). The organization had 18 branches across the country and was very enthusiastic, but the government's policy did not change and the organization's influence gradually weakened. Finally, on January 20, 1887, a national convention was held to discuss the organization's continued existence. The organization attempted to rebuild by having members share the debts and closing the hospital, but the organization's journal ceased publication after the 105th issue (1889) and it was dissolved.
