Founded in 1908 as the Department of Pathology at the University of Tokyo. In 1934, the Cancer Institute and its affiliated hospital were opened in Nishi-Sugamo, Tokyo, and full-scale research and treatment began. Most of the institute was burned down during World War II, and the affiliated hospital was temporarily located in Higashi-Ginza, but both the institute and hospital have now been rebuilt in Nishi-Sugamo, Toshima Ward.
