A city in the northeastern part of Toyama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. During the Nanboku-cho period, Matsukura Castle and other mountain castles were built around the central city area facing Toyama Bay, and it developed as a fishing port and local commercial center in the early modern period. It is still a base for North Pacific fishing, and is famous for firefly squid fishing. The Ainokaze Toyama Railway, Toyama Chiho Railway, and Hokuriku Expressway run through the city. Before World War II, there was a chemical industry, mainly carbide, but after the war, textile industries were established, and recently electrical equipment and general machinery industries have rapidly developed. It is known for the Uozu Buried Forest (a special natural monument) which is thought to have been submerged about 2000 years ago, and when natural conditions are favorable around April and May, mirages can be seen.
