Robert Applegarth
1834‐1924
British trade union leader. Son of a Yorkshire whaler. From the age of ten he worked as a shoe shiner and waiter before becoming a joiner. He emigrated to America in 1852. Returning to Sheffield in 1858, he joined a small local carpenters' union, eventually becoming its chairman. In 1861, this union merged with the United Union of Carpenters and Joiners, which had been formed the previous year, and he became its general secretary the following year. He moved to London in 1864, and in 1867 he formed the Council of United Unions with leaders of the "new model unions" of the time (known as the junta), and contributed to the passage of the Trade Unions Act of 1871 (which legally recognised trade union activity).
