Aristippos - Aristippus (English spelling)

An ancient Greek hedonistic philosopher. Born in Cyrene on the north coast of Africa. He traveled to Athens as an admirer of Socrates, and after living in the royal court of Sicily and elsewhere, he established the School of Cyrene in his hometown. Socrates neither avoided pleasure nor succumbed to it, and it seems he inherited this trait from his teacher. When criticized for his relationship with the prostitute Lais, he is said to have replied, "I embrace her but am not embraced by her. The best thing is not to not enjoy, but to control pleasure and not be overcome by it."

古代ギリシアの快楽主義の哲学者。アフリカ北岸キレネの生まれ。ソクラテスを慕ってアテネに渡り、さらにシチリア島の宮廷などで生活したのち、故郷にキレネ学派を開いた。ソクラテスは快楽を避けることもそれに負けることもなかったが、師のそのような面を彼は継承したとみられる。遊女ライスとの仲をなじられて、「ライスを抱くが抱かれはしない。最善なのは、楽しまぬことではなく、楽しみを支配して負かされぬことだ」と答えたという。
