...The process of cracking heavy petroleum fractions using a catalyst to increase the production of high-octane gasoline. The principle of catalytic cracking was discovered in 1923 by E. J. Houdry of France. He discovered that when heated heavy petroleum oil was passed over a catalyst (activated clay) made by activating natural clay using sulfuric acid or alkali, a cracking reaction occurred and gasoline was obtained.
