Android - android (English)

A type of humanoid robot. It is a compound word from the Greek word andròs (human, male). Robots come in a variety of shapes depending on their purpose, but the term android refers to robots that resemble humans. Nowadays, the term android is often used to refer to mechanical humanoid robots of non-biological origin, but originally it referred to artificial humans that were chemically and biologically synthesized, had flesh and blood, and had a human appearance. Some of the most well-known novels that feature androids are Frankenstein (1818) by Madame Shelley, R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robot Company) (1921) by John Charlemagne, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (1968) by Robert Dick, which was later made into a film titled Blade Runner (1982). In the world of manga, representative works include Tezuka Osamu's Astro Boy (1951) and 8 Man (1963), written by Hirai Kazumasa and illustrated by Kuwata Jiro. In the film world, The Terminator (1984) is famous. Androids are sometimes confused with cyborgs, but even if they look like humans, androids are ultimately robots and do not have any human tissue. Therefore, even though they have the consciousness of a police officer, Robocop, the protagonist of the film Robocop (1987), who is equipped with a human brain, is a cyborg, while 8 Man, whose electronic brain has all of his human memories transplanted into it, is an android.

ヒューマノイドロボット（人間型ロボット）の一種。ギリシア語のandròs（人間、男性）からの合成語である。ロボットには用途に応じてさまざまな姿をしたものがあるが、そのなかで姿かたちが人間に似ているものをいう。現在では非生物起源で機械仕掛けの人間型ロボットをアンドロイドとよぶ場合が多いが、本来は、化学的、生物学的に合成され、血と肉をもち、人間の姿かたちをした人造人間をさした。アンドロイドが登場する代表的な小説としては、シェリー夫人の『フランケンシュタイン』（1818）、チャペックの『R・U・R(えるうーえる)（ロッサムの万能ロボット会社）』（1921）、のちに『ブレードランナー』（1982）というタイトルで映画化されたディックの『アンドロイドは電気羊の夢を見るか』（1968）などがある。漫画の世界では手塚治虫(おさむ)の『鉄腕アトム』（1951）、平井和正原作、桑田二郎作画による『8マン』（1963）が代表的な作品である。映画では『ターミネーター』（1984）が有名である。アンドロイドはサイボーグと混同される場合があるが、姿こそ人間そっくりであるにせよアンドロイドはあくまでもロボットであり、人間の組織の部分が存在しない。したがって、同じように警官としての意識をもっていても、人間の頭脳をそのまま搭載している、映画『ロボコップ』（1987）の主人公ロボコップはサイボーグであり、電子頭脳に人間の記憶をそっくり移植した8マンはアンドロイドである。
