...a classification of the external appearance of an organism that reflects its way of life. It refers to forms that are closely related to environmental conditions such as the conditions of the habitat, and can refer to not only the general form of an individual organism, but also the form of a specific part. In times when the phylogenetic relationships of organisms were not an issue, emphasis was placed on what corresponded to the organism's way of life when classifying diverse organisms. Already in the Greek era, Aristotle classified animals according to whether they had blood or the number of legs, and Theophrastus classified plants into trees, shrubs, subshrubs, herbs, etc.
