It is an extinct language, the language of the Sumerians, the oldest civilized people in Mesopotamia. Its language family is unknown. It has a strong agglutinative character. The oldest recorded language is from around 3000 BCE. It was replaced by Akkadian and became extinct, but its cuneiform writing system and many cultural vocabulary were borrowed by Akkadian.
