Kawara Saiko - Kawara Saiko

Japanese:
Kawara Saiko - Kawara Saiko

A perennial plant of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows 20-40 cm tall, but occasionally grows to 70 cm tall. It is covered with long hairs. The roots are thick and large. The leaves are pinnately compound, the leaflets are deeply pinnately incised, and the undersides are densely covered with white soft hairs. From June to August, many yellow 5-petal flowers, each about 1 cm in diameter, bloom at the tip of the stem. The fruits are achenes. It grows on sunny riverbanks and sandy coasts in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and occasionally in wilderness and mountainous areas. It is also found in China, Korea, Russia, and Taiwan. The name comes from the fact that the plant resembles the Bupleurum species of the Apiaceae family and grows on riverbanks. In China, the whole plant is used as a herbal medicine. It is similar to this species, but has no small lobes between the leaflets, has fewer leaflets, and is large and wide. P. niponica Th. Wolf is found in Honshu and Hokkaido.
