The city is located in the northwest of Western Australia, and is the capital of the Pilbara region. It has a population of 14,000 (1987). It has been a small port town since the 19th century, but in the 1960s a mine railway and a dedicated port were built, and it grew rapidly as an export port for three mines, including Mount Newman, about 350 km to the south. Salt is also produced here. There is an airport, and New Town (South Hedland) has been built. It was founded in 1863, and its name comes from the name of the first white person to arrive in Australia. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
