Torres (English spelling)
Born: 1497. Valencia
[Died] October 2, 1570. Shiki, Amakusa. Spanish Jesuit priest and head of missionary work in Japan. Also read as Torres. He met F. Xavier in India and joined the Society of Jesus in 1548. He came to Japan with Xavier the following year, and after Xavier left Japan, he preached mainly in Yamaguchi as the head of missionary work, gaining about 2,000 followers, including samurai, in five years. However, in 1554, due to the civil war in Yamaguchi, he moved his base to Bungo Prefecture. He organized a group called "Confraria" for "Acts of Mercy" and worked on poverty relief projects, and also adopted a policy of nationwide conversion through the education of the upper echelons, and made efforts to spread Christianity in Kyoto.

Torres, Luis Váez de

A Portuguese navigator of the 17th century. A pioneer in the development of Oceania. He is said to have sailed down the Torres Strait on the east coast of Australia on a ship left behind by an expedition sent by King Philip III of Spain (1606) and to have sighted Cape York, the northernmost point of the Australian continent.

スペインのイエズス会司祭,日本布教長。トルレスとも読む。インドで F.ザビエルに会い,1548年イエズス会に入会。翌 49年ザビエルとともに来日,ザビエル離日後は布教長として山口を中心に布教にあたり,5年間に武士を含む約 2000名の信者を獲得したが,天文 23 (1554) 年山口内乱のため豊後府内に本拠を移した。「慈悲の所作」のための組 confrariaを組織して救貧事業にあたるとともに,上層部の教化による全国改宗政策をも採用,京都開教に努力した。

Torres, Luis Váez de

17世紀のポルトガルの航海者。オセアニア開発の先駆者。スペイン王フェリペ3世の派遣した探検隊の残した船でオーストラリアの東海岸,トレス海峡を航行し (1606) ,オーストラリア大陸の最北端ヨーク岬を望見したといわれている。
