An ancient city in northwest Asia Minor. Also known as Ilion. Located on the hill of Hissarlik, about 5 km from the coast, it prospered due to its advantageous position controlling the Dardanelles Strait, which led to the development of trade. It left behind nine layers of ruins spanning from around 3000 BC to the Roman period. The ruins were discovered in 1870 by Schliemann, who believed in the existence of the world depicted in Homer's epics, and were investigated in detail by archaeologist Dörpfeld. Excavations have continued since then. The ruins of the second layer (second city) are the largest, with solid walls and a majestic gate, a row of megaron-style buildings, and many treasures such as golden crowns and necklaces. The legendary Trojan War took place in the seventh layer, which belongs to the Mycenaean culture. The discovery of Troy played a major role in the investigation of Aegean civilization. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1998. → Related article Dardanelles Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
