Kawada

Japanese: 川田 - かわた
Kawada
A district of Yoshinogawa City on the south bank of the downstream Yoshino River in northern Tokushima Prefecture. Former town name. In 1955, Yamase Town and Miyama Village were combined to form Yamakawa Town, and in 2004, it merged with Kamojima Town, Kawajima Town, and Misato Village to form Yoshinogawa City. During the Nanboku-cho period, the Hosokawa clan established Shimodate here and built shrines and temples, and the settlement was formed. In the mid-Edo period, a market called Takatsu City was established for the festival of Takatsu Gongen. Kawata's washi paper, which has a tradition dating back to the feudal period, is made from mitsumata and kozo trees in the Shikoku Mountains, and is still shipped to Kyoto and other places today. The Kawata Community Center has a collection of all the tools used to make Kawata handmade washi paper.
