A volcanic island in the South Pacific that belongs to the southern group of the Cook Islands. A circular island surrounded by coral reefs. It produces oranges, tomatoes, bananas, copra, etc. It is the administrative centre of the Cook Islands, with its capital Avarua on the northern coast. Since ancient times, it was a stopover point on Polynesian voyages from Tahiti to New Zealand, and has many myths and legends. In 1985, the South Pacific Forum was held, and the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone Treaty (commonly known as the Treaty of Rarotonga) was adopted. 67 km2 .
