Also written as tsumami-zaiku. A type of handicraft in which thin silk or thin crepe is cut into 1-3 cm squares, folded into triangles with tweezers, and attached to paper to create shapes of flowers, birds, insects, fish, etc. Around the middle of the Edo period, it became fashionable to wear hairpins made with tsumami-zaiku in Shimada-mage hairstyles, and until women's hairstyles were westernized, they were called "hana-kanzashi" or "hana-gushi" and were the main head ornaments for girls and young women, but their use has decreased and they are only seen in hair ornaments, hagoita (battledoes), and kusudama (balloon decorations). Tsumami-zaiku has been practiced as a handicraft by women since the Edo period, but elaborate products with flower cores and other ornaments decorated with moire were also produced commercially.
