Record of the Jing Chai (English)

Japanese: 荆釵記 - けいさき（英語表記）Jīng chāi jì

A full-length Chinese drama from the late Yuan and early Ming periods. A humorous piece set to music from the south. Author unknown. It depicts the rise of Song's King Shipeng and the faithfulness of his wife, Qian Yulian. Due to the tyranny of the prime minister and the unrequited love of a wealthy man, Shipeng, who had passed the Zhuangyuan exam, is demoted and Gyulian attempts suicide, but the Jing cai (Jing's hairpin) that Shipeng gave to Gyulian as a gift serves as evidence, and the couple are reunited and have a happy ending. This is one of the masterpieces from the period when zaju (traditional opera) of the Yuan dynasty was in decline and humorous prose in the Hangzhou and Wenzhou areas was beginning to develop. 中国，元末･明初の長編戯曲。南方系の楽曲による戯文。作者未詳。宋の王十朋の出世と，妻の銭玉蓮の貞節を描く。丞相の専横や富豪の横恋慕のため，状元に及第した十朋の左遷や玉蓮の自殺未遂などがおこるが，十朋が聘礼として玉蓮に贈った荆釵(荆のかんざし)が証拠となり，夫婦が再会して団円となる。元の雑劇が衰退して，杭州･温州あたりの戯文が発展しはじめた時期の傑作の一つである。【岩城秀夫】
