Oléron Island (English spelling)
An island in the Charente-Maritime department in western France. Population 16,000 (1975). It is the second largest island in France after Corsica in terms of area (175 km2). It faces the south side of the Charente River mouth, and is separated from the neighboring Île de Ré by the Antioche Channel, and from the Charente-Maritime department on the opposite shore by the Momuson Channel. In 1966, a 3 km long bridge was completed, connecting it to the continent by land. The island is a low plateau made of limestone, with sand dunes on the periphery and forests in places.
