[Born] 1407? Hunyad, Transylvania
[Died] August 11, 1456, Belgrade. Hungarian soldier and politician. Born into a Romanian noble family in the Principality of Wallachia. As a soldier, he served in the war against the Ottoman Empire. At a young age, he served at the court of King Sigismund and was appointed Prince of Transylvania. In 1446, he was supported by the lower nobility and became regent for the young king Ladislaus V. In 1456, he defeated the Ottoman army in the Battle of Belgrade, securing Hungary's independence for the next 70 years, but died in battle after contracting the Black Death.
