Shigeyori Kawagoe

Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. Son of Kawagoe Yoshitaka, he was called Taro. As head of the Chichibu lineage Taira clan, he was based in Kawagoe Manor in Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture), the territory of Shinhiyoshisha Shrine, and served as the general inspector of Musashi Province's Rususho. When Minamoto no Yoritomo raised an army in 1180, he defeated Miura Yoshiaki, who sided with Yoritomo, at Kinugasa Castle in Sagami together with Hatakeyama Shigetada and others. He later defected to Yoritomo and became a powerful vassal of Musashi, and made an effort to pursue and defeat Minamoto no Yoshinaka and the Taira clan. Shigeyori's wife was the daughter of Yoritomo's wet nurse, Hiki no Ama, and so Yoritomo trusted him, and the daughter became the wife of Yoritomo's younger brother, Yoshitsune. As a result, he was later involved with the exiled Yoshitsune, and was executed by Yoritomo, and his territory was entrusted to his wife (Kawagoe Ama). <References> "Kawagoe City History", Historical Materials, Middle Ages 1

平安末・鎌倉前期の武将。河越能隆の子,太郎を称す。秩父流平氏の家督として,新日吉社領武蔵国河越荘(埼玉県)を本拠として武蔵国留守所総検校職となり,治承4(1180)年の源頼朝挙兵のとき,頼朝に味方した三浦義明を畠山重忠らと共に相模衣笠城に討った。その後,頼朝に降り武蔵の有力御家人となり,源義仲や平氏の追討に尽力した。重頼の妻は頼朝の乳母比企尼の娘であることから頼朝に信任され,その娘は頼朝の弟義経の妻となった。そのためのち追放された義経に縁座して頼朝に誅殺され,所領は妻(河越尼)に付託された。<参考文献>『川越市史』史料編中世1
