...Even after the failure of S. Bolivar's attempt at a grand coalition, the possibility of a unification of Peru and Bolivia remained, but in the midst of a power struggle among the caudillos in Lima, Bolivian President Santa Cruz allied with Orbegoso, who had been driven out of the Lima government the previous year, and established a federation under Bolivia's leadership. However, no matter how much the two countries shared historical common ground, the expansion of the federation's territory into the entire central Andes was a threat to the security of Chile in particular, and the Chilean government, in agreement with the Lima government, sent troops and clashed with the federal army in January of the following year, 1839, in Yungay, north of Lima, together with the Peruvian army led by A. Gamarra (1785-1841). The federal army was defeated in this war, and the federation was dissolved.
