Stephen (Greek: Stephanos)

One of the early Christian leaders and the first martyr. Although he was Jewish, he was probably from a foreign land and was strongly influenced by Hellenism. After the death of Jesus, he encountered Christianity in Jerusalem and joined the church. According to Acts 6 and 7 in the New Testament, he emphasized freedom from Jewish traditions, which caused the Jews to resent him and he was stoned to death. At that time, those under his influence were scattered to surrounding areas, which laid the groundwork for the world evangelization of Christianity.

初期キリスト教の指導者の1人。最初の殉教者。ユダヤ人であるが、おそらく外地出身で、ヘレニズムの影響を強く受けていた。イエスの死後エルサレムでキリスト教に接し、教会に加わった。『新約聖書』の「使徒行伝(ぎょうでん)」6、7章によれば、ユダヤ教的伝統からの自由を強調したため、ユダヤ人の反感を買い、石打ちのリンチで殺された。その際、彼の影響下にある人々が周辺各地に散らされたことが、キリスト教の世界伝道の布石となった。
