Born: February 27, 1899, West Pembroke
[Died] March 31, 1978. Toronto Canadian physiologist. Graduated from the University of Toronto in 1925. While still a student in 1921, he became F. Banting's laboratory assistant and succeeded in extracting insulin from dog pancreas. He also discovered choline, a vitamin B complex, and the enzyme histaminase. He was the first person to propose the use of anticoagulants to treat thrombosis. From 1929 to 1965, he was professor of physiology at the University of Toronto. From 1941 to 1967, he was director of the Banting-Best Institute of Medical Research. His main work was The Physiological Basis of Medical Practice (1937).
